Many of us wonder, "What clothes will look best on me?" We try on one piece of clothing article after another, trying to figure out which one is best. Wouldn't it be easier to know what clothing types looked best on your body type before you left for the store? Well, here are some tips to help.
About Your Body Type:
No
two people have the same body type. Our bodies all have similarities
and differences. We have features we like, and other we do not care for.
Though we might wish for the perfect body, the key to finding clothing
is to learn
tricks that will flatter your body.
tricks that will flatter your body.
Finding
Your Body Type:
When finding your body type, its best to
examine the relationship between your chest, waist and hip-line. It is
their proportion to each other that will help you determine the best
clothing styles that suit you and flatter your body. To assess your body
type, stand in front of a long full length mirror. Using a long
straight object (broom sticks, rulers, and the like will work great),
hold it under your arm pit and let it rest on your hip. This should give
you a general idea of how your chest, waist, and hip-line are in
relation to each other.
Hourglass:
The
hourglass figure will often have:
- Smaller shoulders and fuller hips
- A small waist, a waist with definition
If this is you, you are curvy and have a body type that is great
for many styles. Clothing that is fitted properly, not too tight, and
cinches at the smallest part of your waist is a fabulous look. Long
flowing clothing is good for almost every hour glass figure with the
exception to petites. When searching for clothing, find clothing that
you are comfortable with, and that can show off your curves.
Inverted
Triangle:
The inverted triangle figure will often have:
- A proportionally larger bust and/or broad shoulders
- A defined waist
- Hips that are smaller that are proportionally smaller than your bust
If this is you, you are probably more top heavy. Don't be afraid
to wear bright colored tops and V-necks, these will flatter your shape.
Fuller skirts and wide leg pants will beautifully balance your shape.
Halters are also very flattering for your body type. Try to avoid
shoulder pads, and tops that make your shoulders look broad, such as a
square neck.
Triangle:
The triangle figure
will often have:
- Small shoulders and/or bust
- Fuller hips that are proportionally larger than your bust
- A well-defined and smaller waist
If this is you, you are more bottom heavy. A great shape for
flowing A-line skirts! Wearing bright colored tops, collars, lapels, and
sleeves will help you balance out your shape. Try to avoid clothes that
put emphasis on your lower half such as pencil skirts or printed
bottoms.
Rectangle:
The rectangle figure
will often have:
- Bust-line and hip-line are proportionally the same
- A waist that isn't very defined
If this is you, you want to give yourself more definition.
Wearing coats and clothes that are cinchedat the waist give you a curvy
look. If you have a smaller bust you can also pull off high-neck tops.
Try to avoid low-rise pants with a longer top which may elongate you.
Rather look for clothing that will give you a curvy appearance; add
belts to every outfit to add a waistline.
Oval and
Diamond:
The oval figure will often have:
- You may have a larger bust
- Your waist may not be defined
- May have fuller hips
If this is you, you may or may not have curves. You may also be
busty. Try to aim for comfortable fitting clothing. Tops and dresses
that flow through the waistline are wonderful. Flowing material is also
your friend along with lower neck-lines. Use belts to add a waistline
and beautiful flair. Try to avoid boxy jackets, pleated skirts, large
print fabric and clingy fabrics.
By knowing your body type, it
will make shopping for the perfect clothing a lot easier.
